In 2022, for my Visual Concepts class, I was tasked with making an artwork based on spirituality and family. Given that this was my last class project, I wanted to dedicate it to my mother. My mother was born in the very Catholic country of Nicaragua, and I wanted to embrace her hometown of Granada, Nicaragua. This town is beautiful, and I miss it so much.
In the original piece, I wanted to capture the main landmarks in the town, moving them closer together. I displayed a point of view through a Granada street, showing the San Juan de Dios Hospital as the main focal point. This very hospital is the one my mom was born in. Behind, of course, is the Nicaragua flag, Catedral de Granada, and the Mombacho Volcano.
Below the painting was a physical brick that my mother had taken from the hospital. She was able to obtain it because the guard knew who my grandmother was. My grandmother, a nurse, assisted with his birth, which connected him with my mom, allowing her to take a brick, which she later snuck onto the plane back home. This brick is now meant to be displayed with the painting, given that there is a big white spot in the painting, resembling a missing piece from it. I could have executed it better.
In 2024, I made an animation based on that painting and wanted to achieve the same vibe, creating a digital animation version of something that means a lot to me and my family.
